About Yi She

Yi She is a regeneration project located in the pilot zone of the International Low Carbon City. It will not use the demolish-and-construction method. Instead, diverse design techniques efficiently integrating available resources will be adopted to transform the existing resettlement housing of the Universiade into a multi-use hotel offering research and development facilities, offices, pilotscale experiment facilities, light manufacturing and commercial facilities.

The site was called Ge Keng 2# Dormitory of Gaoqiao Industrial Park. It will be named Yi She in Chinese after the redevelopment meaning that the hotel is livable and comfortable. The English name is C Houtel - C stands for Comfortable and Low carbon whilst Houtel is a word coined combining House and Hotel. House refers to one's own living space and home. Therefore, the word Houtel represents that Yi She both offers functionality of apartments and hotels and the sweetness of home. The external of Yi She will be pure white, which will increase the building's prominence in the regeneration development area in the Industrial Park and reflect the features of low carbon and simplicity.

I. Project Background

In order to promote the image and concept of the Shenzhen International Low Carbon City and increase its international influence, Shenzhen Public Arts Center, upon requests from the Plan and Construction Office of the ILCC and SDG, proposes to hold a public competition based on the international design competition for PINGDI 1.1 Low Carbon City Architectural Solutions. The competition, open to individuals or groups with low carbon awareness, will be centered on low carbon living and inventions. It aims to showcase the core value and culture of the ICLL and interpret the public understanding of low carbon life.

Participants shall focus on the idea of energy conservation involved in daily life and tailor their submissions for Yi She and the everyday functions it offers, such as serving as a hotel and offering spaces for apartments, studios, cafés, restaurants and conference rooms. Low-carbon technologies and ideas shall be used to create and produce innovations that are either conducive to energy saving or in line with the low-carbon concept. Winning entries will be displayed or used by Yi She.

II. Competition Content

1. This competition will be in two directions including physical innovations and creative concepts.

Physical innovations refer to low-carbon items that are suitable for Yi She and its immediate surroundings. They can be but are not limited to lighting, kitchenware, bathroom items and items for daily use and travels.

Creative concepts mean ideas incorporating advanced technologies and concepts that cannot be developed into physical samples yet. Works can be displayed as videos or dynamic drawings. They can include but are not limited to smart offices, smart homes and carbon emission monitors.

2. Contestants are expected to respond to one or more questions listed below and provide solutions.

Ⅰ. How to make common areas comfortable: the hotel has a few common areas which enjoy good ventilation. However, it is not comfortable enough in summer and AC cannot be used in these areas as they are open spaces. What are the alternatives to increase the comfortability of these areas (e.g. function rooms on level 2)

Ⅱ. How to make common areas fun: how to make the internal common areas interesting (e.g. corridors, balconies and sky gardens)

Ⅲ. How to make common areas green: Plenty of space can be turn into green spaces. How can we achieve functionality while keeping them look pleasant and easy to maintain (e.g. corridors, balconies)?

Ⅳ. Smart living: intelligent low carbon design for cleaning, maintenance, electricity and sanitary systems.

Ⅴ. Innovations: innovations that promote low-carbon lifestyle will be displayed at Yi She. Yi She, as a place for low-carbon living, calls everyone to do the same.

III. Competition Groups

Participants will be divided into two groups, the children's and non-children's group. Each group involves the two directions of physical innovations and creative concepts. Participants shall choose the group and direction based on their own circumstances. Registration will be reviewed by the Competition Review Board.
