In order to thoroughly implement the new development concepts in city planning and the important open policy guidelines of Xi Jinping, the President of the People’s Republic of China to building Qianhai into a “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Corporation Demonstrative zone and a new city center”. The international competition for the design of the landmark for Qianhai new city center will be launched soon according to the Shenzhen municipal government.

The Qianhai development project was organised by Qianhai International Liaison Service Limited., Urban Planning, Land Resources Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, also co-organized by the Shenzhen Qianhai & Shekou Free Trade Zone Investment Development Co., Ltd. This pre-announcement notice is to invite distinguished architects and professional teams from home and abroad to participate in this project in the hope of collecting the most creative with world-vision design to build a brand-new landmark for the new city center of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

ⅠGeneral Information of the landmark building in Qianhai New City Center

1. Positioning Statement

The landmark building should perform as the portal for the New Qianhai City Center, to establish a new image for Shenzhen and becoming a representative landmark for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

2. Location

The landmark building should be located within unit 17 of Qianhai Mawan District which lies at the north-western boundaries of the coast (The landmark development should not exceed 153.7 meters since there is aviation height limit control). The total site area is 8 hectares, the current 4.8 hectares is land, 3.2 is the sea area and it can be set within the sea and land area. It is not limited to the following three forms: backfilling part of the coastal waters; carry out coastal land reclamation for construction of a landmark similar with Hong Kong; building a permeable structure to establish a unique sea landmark.

3. Functions

In principle, the landmark must be designed as a mixed-use development with various functions, not limited to sightseeing, showcase, entertainment, etc. Different forms of buildings, sculptures, structure, etc. can be used in the development.

On the site, the landmark building will be the only high-rise development with landscaping and public functional areas around. Other supporting facilities for the above can be arranged underground or semi-underground.

Ⅱ Methods of Application

This international competition for landmark design of Qianhai New City Center is intended to adopt invitation & open enrollment methods for solicitation of creative design proposals. The authority is planning to invite 15 world-class architectural design companies and excellent artists to participate in the competition. At the same time, individual architects and interested companies are also welcomed to join.
