1.   Introduction

The boundary of Houhai extends to Binhai Avenue in the north, Shahexi Road in the east, Donglin Road in the south and Houhaibin Road in the west. The total area is about 2,26 k㎡. As part of the “Three Horizontal Axises and One Vertical Axis” planning structure, the East Extension of Shenzhen Bay Avenue is connected to Shenzhen Bay Avenue in the west and Talent park and the Gulf in the east. There are also world influential enterprise headquarters on the south and north sides of this Avenue. The east extension of Shenzhen Bay Avenue is one of the most important main axises in the future of Houhai Central District, and has significant connective and display functions.

2.   Aims of the Competition

As a vital node and the international innovation portal of the Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao,Houhai Centre will undertake the important central business district functions and the portal display function of Nanshan District, and become an international high-standard city center of financial headquarters. As important as the compact small blocks, the high-density road network, humanistic and cultural streets in Houhai, the “Three Horizontal Axises and One Vertical Axis” structure of public space is the key open space in the whole area, which calls for significant attention to collaborative design in the process of urban design. The multi-dimensional traffic system in the East Extension of Shenzhen Bay Avenue is the gathering place of structural public space and public functions, and has the most important public influence. Therefore, its design and development quality undoubtedly determines and influences the overall public image, the quality of the communication environment and the central area value of Houhai Centre.

This international competition intends to seek the most creative ideas and concepts of urban planning and design, on the basis of “international standard, Shenzhen characteristics and high positioning”. Aiming at the world-class standard and the finest quality, the competition is filled with ambition that makes the multi-dimensional traffic system in the East Extension of Shenzhen Bay Avenue a creative linear public space, a multi-composite experience place and a psychological landmark of public interaction, to further facilitate the urban development in Houhai Centre and Shenzhen.

Work Content

The work is divided into two parts.

The first part:
The conceptual planning of the two-story slow traffic system in Houhai Centre. (The total length is about 3918 meters and the gross area is about 21,549 m2. The scope is shown below.)

(1)     Content details:

The conceptual planning of the two-story slow traffic system should include: the conceptual positioning of the two-story slow traffic system, its specific route, the division of its functions and themes, its space form, its connections with surrounding buildings and ground floor space, etc.

(2)     Design requirements:

  • The planning should aim to highlight Houhai’s status in the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, reflect the characteristics of Headquarters’ economy in Houhai, and combine the themes of scientific and technological innovation, art and culture, to create a first-class two-story corridor system.
  • The planning should be considered in conjunction with the land function and space form of the public cultural land in the south side and the commercial land in the north side.
  • The planning should pay attention to the connection among important transportation nodes, cultural facilities, underground space, and ground public space.
  • The planning should take the characteristics of surrounding plots into consideration, to basically meet the actual situation and needs of the owners of the plots around the second-floor pedestrian system.

The second part (core task):
The multi-dimensional space design for East Section of Shenzhen Bay Avenue. (Including the 2nd floor corridor, about 980 meters, the ground floor linear landscape, about 18,100 m2, and the underground space, about 40,660 m2 per floor, 2 layers are proposed. The scope is shown below.)

(1)     Content details:

  • The general plan for the multi-dimensional space.
  • Plans for each floor (the 2nd floor, ground floor and underground space).
  • The overall space form, traffic organization, vertical design, structure and underground architecture design, renderings of important nodes, underground space functions and streamlines, etc.

(2)     Design requirements:

  • The design should clarify the connection method and space form between the proposed multi-dimensional space and the ground transportation, Metro line 13, the current two-story slow traffic system, the public cultural land in the south side, and surrounding public facilities and development land.
  • An integral and integrated design is required for the underground space, and the large foundation pit is prioritized.
  • It is necessary to establish control conditions to guide the development and construction of the surrounding area not included in the design scope.
  • It is recommended to form a joint team composed of designers professional in landscape, architecture, underground space, structure, urban planning and design to participate in the competition.

Registration Requirements

The competition will open to public, all domestic and foreign design companies, who has relative planning and design experience, are welcoming. Joint design team is allowed, but any members of the joint can’t participate again in the competition in their own name or in another joint with other design companies. Individual application by person is not allowed.

A team with similar experience as below will be given priority to:

(1)     Having rich experience in public landscape and environment creation.

(2)     Having experience in urban underground space design.

(3)     Having experience in slow walkway and air bridge structure design.

(4)     Having experience in planning and design for culture, art and leisure business.

(5)     Having experience in developing the same type of project or participating in similar competitions in China.
