As the forefront of reform and opening-up policy, Shenzhen experiences a unique development different from other cities. Its architectural forms are also rich and varied. Both modern buildings and low-cost village houses reflect the characteristics of Shenzhen. In November 2008, Shenzhen was awarded the "City of Design" by UNESCO. There is no doubt that architecture has played a role in it. However, only a few publications about Shenzhen architecture are found. Most of them are too specialized and professional for the public to read. A guide to the Shenzhen architecture is hence needed for the public interest. Besides, as an international city under rapid development, Shenzhen has experienced profound changes during the past 30 years and a recording for the changes and cultural memories is required. Based on the above intentions, Shenzhen Urban Planning and Land Committee compiles and publishes this book: Fun City-Map of Shenzhen Architectural.
The 299 buildings and constructions selected in this book are the result of a thorough research, classification, information collection, public solicitation, expert discussions and public selection from more than 60,000 buildings in Shenzhen. These selected buildings include masterpieces of architect masters such as Vanke Center, common buildings bear a collective memory such as Shanghai Hotel; unique industrial heritage, and little-known ancient architectures. Most of the buildings are constructed after the founding of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and a several historic buildings. Spatially the selection includes 10 districts, from the newly opened Shenzhen Airport T3 in the west, the Dapeng Geological Museum in the east, to the Longgang Laoxunzhen in the north and the Guangdong Shekou Float Glass Plant in the south...
It is our hope that through the professional selection and simple language the book will help to promote the characteristics, personality and live of urban architecture and to improve the quality and image of "city of design".
This is an open and just started publishing project. As the first of its kind, the book is far from perfection. With the social concerns and public participation, we hope that a regular republication in every four to five years will make it a name card for promoting architecture and city image.
