[Lezhu Castle] Proposal of Research on Spatial Diversity and Commonality of kindergartens
March 24, 2015 19:03Following the success of the competition of standardization design and construction scheme for fire stations , the Design Center was once again commissioned by the Bureau of Public Works to study the commonalities of 11 kindergartens in Shenzhen. Drawing on the study of the standardization of fire stations, a comprehensive research can help designers better understand the sites from the perspective of the users. Unlike fire stations, kindergartens are non-standardized buildings. Therefore, the Design center would fully respect the individuality of each kindergarten, build diversified and personalized kindergartens through new research methods and a series of activities, while exploring the standardization principles of their appearances, functions and construction materials.

May 12, 2015 19:29On the afternoon of May 7, the first session of the workshop on the “Spatial Diversity and Commonality of Kindergartens” was held on the 2nd floor of the Sculpture Academy. The event brought together representatives from 12 design firms, principles from 12 kindergartens involved, 2 experts (Feng Guochuan, deputy chief architect of Zhubo Design Group, and Zhu Xiongyi, senior design director of CCDI Dongxiying Studio), and the Bureau of Public Works, construction unit of the project. Also seen as a sharing session for designers, this workshop enabled designers to find out the problems of kindergartens, and to propose solutions that combine the needs of users. Many of the reports from the design firms were innovative and enlightening, well warming up for the next workshop and follow-up competitions.

May 12, 2015 19:28In the middle of April, the project “Lezhu Castle: Workshop on the Spatial Diversity and Commonality of kindergartens” started . This project was jointly launched by the construction unit—the Bureau of Public Works of Shenzhen Municipality, the use unit—the Shenzhen Experimental Preschool Education Group, and the Shenzhen Center for Design (respectively the “Bureau of Public Works”, “Preschool Education Group” and “Design Center” for short). Designers were recruited to conduct research on 11 kindergartens facing upgrading challenges through surveys, seminars, and public events, so as to improve the overall environment of kindergartens.

[Workshop on Spatial Diversity and Commonality of kindergartens] Ⅰ: Results Collection
May 31, 2015 01:50Through visits and research of 11 kindergartens, the architects learned the differences in the needs of each kindergarten and profoundly felt that the design should be people-oriented. While exploring the spatial diversity and the differences in needs, the architects tried to strike a balance among all parties and achieve commonality to make the solution reasonable and implementable. By pooling the reports of all design firms, 5 problems of the status quo and their corresponding solutions could be summarized as follows (sorted by the degree of interest of all design firms) : 1. Security 2. Efficient utilization 3. Health and Sanitation 4. School features 5. Childrens perspectives

[Workshop on Spatial Diversity and Commonality of kindergarten] Ⅱ: Results Collection
June 30, 2015 08:00Based on the workshop’s first visit to kindergartens, the architects shared their own insights into the values of kindergartens and elaborated on the 5 principles of kindergartens design proposed at the first workshop, namely security, high efficiency, health and sanitation, school features and children's perspectives. They also put forward a basic framework for design atlas, laying solid foundation for future atlas editing.

June 16, 2015 02:17On the afternoon of June 4th, the second session of the workshop on the “Spatial Diversity and Commonality of Kindergartens” was held on the 2nd floor of the Sculpture Academy. The event brought together representatives from 10 design firms, the use unit—the kindergartens, the construction unit—the Bureau of Public Works, and 2 experts (Feng Guochuan, deputy chief architect of Zhubo Design Group, and Zhong Zhong, deputy professor of the SAUP of Shenzhen University). The workshop mainly took the form of symposium. Each design firm gave a brief report on two major topics—the value of kindergartens and the guideline framework of design. Panel Q&A section and discussions were also included.

[Lezhu Castle] Record of Workshop III on Spatial Diversity and Commonality of kindergarten
August 01, 2015 00:30Each design firm gave excellent presentations on two major topics—the plot analysis of the kindergarten that the unit is paired with and the visualization of one chapter of its design atlas. According to their research results, technological and design capabilities, the expert panel selected two winning design firms after much discussion. The first place went to A+E Design, and the second place went to FCHA.
