  2. DETAILS

Shenzhen, a vigorous and innovative modern coastal city, is striving to develop itself into a global maritime center under the Guidelines on Supporting Shenzhen in Building the Pilot Demonstration Area of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics released by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2019. Shenzhen Maritime Museum has been included into the city’s “Ten New Major Cultural Facilities” under the Plan of Shenzhen Municipality on Accelerating the Construction of Major Cultural and Sports Facilities issued by the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government.

Planned as a domestically leading and world-class facility, Shenzhen Maritime Museum aims to create a comprehensive maritime museum integrating such functions as collection, research, exhibition, and science education. Upon completion, it will present a full picture of China in the spectrum of the maritime history and the ocean in the perspective of future development, and make itself a collection and exhibition center of marine resources, a marine culture and education center, and a marine research center.

The International Architecture Design Competition for Shenzhen Maritime Museum (the Competition) is now launched to solicit the participation of excellent design teams from home and abroad. The Competition will be conducted in an open, fair and impartial manner to achieve the project goal of creating a new cultural landmark that contributes to the city’s efforts in making itself a global maritime center.

Work Content

Located in Xinda Area of Dapeng Peninsula, Shenzhen Maritime Museum, facing Longqi Bay, is about 50km away from the downtown of Futian District and about 90km from Bao’an International Airport.

Adjacent to the north of the main venue, the overwater works with a GFA of about 8,000 m2 will be planned with no restriction on its specific location.

Design Scopes

Design contents at the competition phase include but are not limited to:

Architecture conceptual design (including descriptions of structure, MEP and other specialties);

Landscape conceptual design;

Interior conceptual design (public and exhibition spaces).

Registration Requirements

Registration Requirements for Open Call

The open call sets no threshold in terms of qualification certificate. All local and international design teams (independent legal entities or other organizations that can independently bear civil liability) with relevant design experience are eligible for the registration. Registration in the form of design consortium is acceptable, and each consortium shall have no more than three members in principle. It is encouraged to join hands with the museum exhibition planning and design teams to participate in the Competition. None of the members of a consortium is allowed to sign up again in its own name or in the form of another consortium. Registration by individuals or teams of individuals will not be accepted.

The design team awarded with the contract for schematic design and the architectural design development but holding no Class A qualification certificate of architecture (building engineering) should, on its own, commission a local design institute holding such qualification certificate to support the works relating to permit approval. Before signing the contract, the contractual design team should submit the materials including the project portfolio and design team staffing of the proposed local design institute to the Hosts for approval. Upon the approval of the Hosts, the contractual design team will conclude a contract with the local design institute and ensure that the SD and DD submissions will meet the national and municipal codes, regulations and requirements of the competent authorities.

Different design teams under the same legal representative or direct holding relationship are not allowed to register for the Competition simultaneously.

At the same time, an announcement will be released globally to solicit design teams interested in the Competition. A total of 9 design teams will be selected from those registered for open call and those who have submitted EOI but are not officially invited for the competition evaluation.

Prizes

Following the evaluation of the Evaluation Committee on the submissions provided by the 15 design teams under relevant procedures, 3 excellence prizes and 12 finalists will be nominated. The honoraria (tax inclusive) will be awarded as follows.

Excellence prizes: RMB 1,500,000

Finalists : RMB 1,000,000

The Hosts will determine the design proposal for implementation based on the evaluation comments and other factors. The design team whose design proposal is selected for implementation will be awarded the design contract for SD and architectural DD (specific work scopes and contents shall be subject to the finally executed design contract), and the honoraria will be deducted from the contractual amount.
