SUMMARY:

As a Changjiang Scholar, Professor Sun Yimin is currently Dean of the School of Architecture, South China University of Technology, and a representative architect and urban design expert in Lingnan area. For more than 20 years, Professor Sun has been upholding technological rationality as a core concept in his professional career. Technological rationality means that while pursuing the beauty of architectural form, architects must also consider the rational use of technology and the reasonable planning of functions. In this review, Professor Sun illustrated this concept with his experience as the master planner of Pazhou, Haizhu District, Guangzhou. He also expounded the problems of current urban planning system and the difficulties that foreign concepts would encounter in China. To cope with existing problems, Professor Sun proposed that urban planning and design design should set up practical and flexible planning systems and design guidelines based on solid academic foundations and regional conditions.
