SUMMARY:

The City of Shenzhen shall encounter the challenges of a large-scale economic transformation and urban regeneration soon after 30 years of reform--Luohu District is of particular interest. The proposed renovation of the former Shenzhen tobacco factory into a future design school can be seen as one of the important attempts. Between March and May, 2012, postgraduate students from School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), conducted a study on how particular component(s) of a design school could possibly connect, interact or exchange with the world. Collaborating with Shenzhen Shenzhen Center for Design, the students further proposed strategies about urban systems and space, and hereby to response to problems arising from the industrial landscape of the Pearl River Delta, the demographic change of the city, and the ongoing transformation of old Luohu District.
