SUMMARY:
New Urbanism is a new theory on urban planning and design in the early 1990s to address urban problems brought about by the disorderly expansion of suburbs. The theory advocates the creation and reconstruction of communities which are diversified, pedestrian-friendly, compact and adaptive for different usage. It is composed of two major principles, namely the Principle of Traditional Neighborhood Design (TND) and the Principle of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). As one of the initiators of New Urbanism, Mr. Joseph Scanga integrated New Urbanism with the eight principles for low-carbon urban development and practice, and provided his own unique insights to the construction of Shenzhen Marine City. He elaborated on the eight principles and their application to the project in Ji'nan, China during the second Shenzhen Marine City Forum.
