In the second phase of the SMALL & SMART DESIGN COMPETITION, wecame to Lixin Garden. We tried to start small, and through the competition, to publicly solicit design solutions that respond to the needs of the community residents and improve the public space, community environment and living space of residents.

To what extent the community problems can be solved in the context of architecture? How to balance between residents' demands and design?
In this interview, Saturday workshop shared the detailed work experience from research to implementation for the community micro-renewal, and the difficulties of entering into a non-professional filed, and took their actual operations in every link as an example to explain what is to "think the entire transformation plan from the perspective of community residents."
The SMALL & SMART DESIGN COMPETITION 2.0 aims at giving full play to the advantages of the mature residents' council mechanism of Lixin community, so as to learn and explore a new way of working in the competition.
There were 38 projects from 19 teams submitted during the first phase of the SMALL & SMART DESIGN COMPETITION. These submitted projects studied and analyzed the crowded, “dirty and messy” but extremely rich public space of the urban villages and offer innovative ideas for improving the residents’ daily life. The 13 finalists selected by the competition judging panel were displayed in the 2017 annual exhibition of BI-CITY BIENNALE OF URBANISM\ARCHITECTURE. Eight other programs from “Learn: Go to the village with UABB and do something! – Nantou Ancient City Residents Needs Survey and Innovation Practice Course” were also displayed. The workshop invited professionals from all relevant fields and partners who were concerned about sustainable development to jointly discuss and design social innovation models which were suitable for sustainable communities in Shenzhen.
"Thirty years of real estate-led urban development model has also trained designers' thinking. The starting point of our designers is often 'consumer-oriented' rather than problem-oriented, which makes Chinese designers more like a marketing planner rather than an engineer who solves problems."
This competition lasted half a year, and featured open work, transparent process, timely communication and feedback.
The great achievements of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone are of course encouragement and inspiration for Xiong'an New Area. But what specific experience of Shenzhen can be learned by Xiong'an?
