Trip to iD TOWN: An Urban Heritage as well as An Art Palace

September 19, 2018 15:16

I am an independent architect. People in the architecture industry may know that architectural design needs to contend with maters like materials, venues, history and society difficulties. This process is very tough, but after that, we can always achieve outcome like iD TOWN. Though these outcomes may present some problems, they would bring changes and updates to the city or the base, and these updated ideas can affect future process of the city. This is what we are happy to see. Because of this, we are willing to make efforts for it. ——He Jianxiang

Trip to Baidu International Building

September 19, 2018 12:14

"Unlike most office buildings in Shenzhen, Baidu International Building is an outward-oriented office building. In this Internet-prevalent era, most companys' dynamic comes from ordinary employees rather than from the decision-makers. The need of changing the office environment is urgent. When designing Baidu International Building, we tried to remove the internal activities of the super tall-buildings to the external space, so that people can see the internal state of these buildings in the distance.

SZSE: Koolhaas's Architectural Typology of Skyscrapers

September 18, 2018 21:25

The buildings by Koolhaas often have simple but shocking appearances. As the studio name Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) suggests, his "typology" of architecture ultimately depends on the context of the city. It is in urban context that "they" (rather than "it") are meaningful. In other words, his architectural typology is in essence a city-architecture typology.

Public Forum: Trade Between Architecture and Money

September 18, 2018 20:54

"I can take any empty space and call it an empty stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre. " British theatre director Peter Brook wrote at the beginning of his famous book The Empty Space. The newly-built Shenzhen Stock Exchange, designed by OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture, hereinafter referred to as OMA or its founding architect Koolhaas), has become the hottest and the most controversial theatre stage in the city. In this space, Shenzhen is staging its life, aesthetics, and spirit.

On January 5th, Design & Life organized an architectural trip to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (hereinafter referred to as "SZSE"). The trip was guided by OMA architect He Wanyu, who led an 100-people team including citizens and special guests to have an in-depth understanding of the internal design and functional arrangements of SZSE. As it was the first time since the completion of the SZSE that it had open its door wide to the public, the activity was warmly welcomed among citizens even in the early stage of signing up.
