The City of Shenzhen shall encounter the challenge of urban regeneration soon after 30 years of economic reform- Luo Hu is of particular interest. The proposed renovation of former SZ tobacco factory into a future design school can be understood as one of such important attempts. M.Des. (Master of Design) students at School of design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, have recently conducted a study on how particular component(s) of a design school possibly connect, transfer or exchange with its surrounding and the world. Collaborating with the Shenzhen Center for Design, students further propose urban systems and spatial applications, in response to the contexts of PRD industrial landscape, Shenzhen demography, and a transforming Luohu district.

A successful tertiary design institution should not be a place for lectures only, but should have a unique academic positioning and become an important character contributing to the society, city or country. Shenzhen College of Interdisciplinary Design (SZCID) located at Luohu, Shenzhen. That is a good location to be a design centre for Pearl River Delta (PRD). It is because there is a pool of resources including the talents. Also there is a well developed transportation network links to every industrial city in PRD. Moreover, the neighbor experienced city -Hong Kong is possible to be a good supporting partner.SZCID may serve as a connector connecting the design industry to the industrial sector in PRD region. Then it will no longer be an ordinary design school only, but also stands for PRD design, industrial and urban development. The college responds to the issues confronting the urbanization of PRD such as the demand of original innovation for the manufacturers, the problem of the floating young under-educated population in Shenzhen, and the urban villages in Luohu.Setting up a design archive system is one way to become the connector. By building up a system to collect, accumulate, organize and store the valuable designs or products in PRD in SZCID, it helps to conserve the process of PRD industries, and maintain a sustainable future development. It also preserves the fruits grown by the students, staffs and scholarly researchers, recording the changes of the college. This system will benefit to the students because of the provision of real case study, first hand information. It helps them to understand the past so that able to invent the future. This will also benefit to the PRD because collaboration allows injection of innovative to the manufacturing. It helps them to value added from secondary industry to tertiary industry.

Design start from connection.Schools and students have outstanding characteristics and different model. As a leading discipline for social and even urban innovation, DESIGN need an informer new teaching system and management mode. Connection between academic and practice the design most important. To achieve this goal, the design involves two aspects: one is to let students to go out. The new teaching system hope to build a connection line beyond school, enterprise and factory.
Student's study will not only stay in the school point, but in a flow of line. Students may in school in the morning, afternoon in the company to do assignment; Morning in factory do model, see exhibition in the afternoon. Student's learning process will be rich and flow. On the other hand is let social walks in. From the timetable each day, each week, each month, each quarter has different sizes of different theme party, let people gathered to inspire design inspiration and create a close communication platform.
There are lots of parties. Such as everyday dinner, weekly party, exhibition, public presentation, etc. All are arranged in the roof, the open sight and big scenery can be the nature background of party. And also,we can enjoy different visual effects through different level of roofs. Everyday dinner will hold in the space of steps, gather the students and professors together to communicate and relax, dinner table will be set in the steps of different level, and connect with the steps. It will seem like waves in the roof. People cross through the dynamic lines. As to the weekly party, the whole roof will be used include the center circle space. It can used as a stage, school can invite designers, artist, musicians, or any other professional person to join. Further to annual show or award, some large scale party, we can use different roofs around the building, and other roofs can be the parallel sessions of the large event.
The school will be the link between academic and practice, party make the school difference, it links the school and society. Finally, the new system can create a extremely different and new design school.

How particular components of a design school possibly connects, transfers or exchanges with the world. The research considers new network and flow of the former tobacco factory site - Base on the concept of worldwide extension, the idea of a project of extension comes up immediately.
A concept bases on the unused area that can be transformed into the resource of education system. Rural area can be transform into the hall of residential along the railway with the developing of school, with the growing number of student flows, the ruins reborn again. The existing ruins area which along the railway, uses the transportation to connect the residential area, education system, and public facilities.
In my proposal- The existing different public spaces in shenzhen- commercial, political, cultural - bring the their effect into the education system. These spots are picked from the liner city exactly along the Shenzhen railway and main road transportation line connects to the spots. A line connects the spots. A corridor. What are the spots? Design stops combines with bus stops Bus stops no longer simply serve as the transportation stop, but also an exchange station between public & school, design & market, students & designers. The bus stops no longer simply as the public facilities, but as the mixed centre of the different cooperators : Shenzhen government, education institutions, design institutions and school itself. As conclusion:
1, The design stop acts as an infrastructure that combines with a bus stop. Passengers of public transport can use this as well.
2, The design stop is organized by different institutions: design companies/ government/ sponsors/ the school.
3, It is managed by students in terms of a part-time job.
4, It uses a variety of ways of displaying for urban design/ media design/ product design which are designed by designers or students.
5, It affects a large group of audience and acts as a branding/ public images/ public image for the school.
By this way, create a new pattern for the design school, we are no longer stay in the same building , for instance, we can have lecture in civil centre. we are experiencing the whole city now. Finally, As extension, the modal can be extended to the whole PRD.

ShenzhenCity for design is the new chapter to china’s development of contemporary design and Chinese design modernity. This new spatial design exchange programme for Shenzhen Collegeof interdisciplinary design is a critical lab for students to explore and be part of involving themselves to the Shenzhen city for design identity as well as the design identity within china. This Spatial exchange programme involves students to bring back the importance factors of traditional designs methods and heritage designs, as well as producing a new design values into contemporary Chinese design. Within this process students are to anaylse, record, regenerate, repair then evaluate its finding to learn and produce new or combined designs within each specific discipline. The spatial design exchange will be located on site and offsite. It can involve exchange of physical material or to exchange of lectures, public information. For the students exchanging physical terms they are able to research first hand information and experiments for their design work and get involved with influential design public spaces or old village spaces. After the exchange, these locations will preferably be new development areas for more designers and artists. Within inside the school, the exchange information or material will be brought back from these sites and explored and investigated by the students as their academic programme lab. The results of the investigation and design regeneration will be results within the tunnels stretching out to the city located on mezzanine levels on the top floor of the site. These tunnels are separated to the three disciplines of media design, industrial design and urban design. They are connected internally providing exchanging identity of the three disciplines, but also they are connected externally by construction lift to provide the experience for visitors to be involved with the continue process of regeneration cycle. This is the critical design exchange lab, which writes the new chapter to contemporary design experiments with new design ethics in education.

Nowadays, the information flow plays a more significant role than the material. For the designers, to catch the changing information all over the world is quite important. This Communication System is built to let students and professors in the school record what they feel and learn though every day’s life and work as the shared information of the design school. In this system, information is collected from different channels, and filtered by different discipline; it can make the information more targeted and has higher quality. At the same time, the interdisciplinary communications get increased. The information terminal in the school is put into the playground as a landscape, so that students may not face to the computers all day.

Library taking an important position in CID and as the start point to replanning educational system. There are different elements in CID building. The element of CID should have workshops, studio, office, meeting rooms, lecture room. As a internal use only for CID. There are close relationship with Library which is gathering, café, corridor and break out area. In order to expand the use of library, we adding recreational elements, transform to be a design club. This will be a semi-public area for externals and students. At the lower level, adding some retail shops, canteen, design book shop, output centre, laser cut room. Especially recruit some local designs. Adding the QR code to the feature wall become a digital system, just use the smart phone scan the QR code to get the information what we want to introduce to student. Like a book / project from the famous architect or a video talking about design. It will become an advertising billboard and widely distributed over the city. It is a good medium to reach the people. Lastly, our mission is going to create the biggest library in the world without increasing the number of books.

The motivation of the project is to promote design atmosphere in this region and increase the extent of civil engagement .It no longer deliberately stressed connections between Pearl River Delta Industry and new design school, but translating into a more rational way of thinking -a single spark can start a prairie fire. What we should do is to rethink the academic function, society function and guidance function which means should not blindly follow the market. Designer views the workshop as the kitchen of whole society design. On one hand, it implies that workshop for designers, just like kitchen for chef, is the place their dream could come true. On the other hand, design school can share their advantages (such as advanced facilities and studios) and help indie designers to achieve their dreams. At the same time, the new workshop will encourage citizens to use it as well. “10 indie designers, 16 small houses, 100 interdisciplinary design students” will get inspiration from each other by workshop and there will be infinity possibilities!

Gain public reputation, government support, academic recognition is essential for a new establisded interdisciplinary school of design which has unique teaching mode. This is my proposal : The teaching or training in this school could focus on helping students to take part in the design competition , in order to improve students' ability of design innovation , design strategy thinking and team-centered collaboration . In the same time , this teaching mode can enhance Shenzhen design quality , connected with the design industry in the Pearl River Delta , serving for regional economic model transition . "Innovation Stadium - Design Competition System" as one theme for interdisciplinary school of design , providing a Professional, practical, and challenging study place for design students , designers alsp design educators in Shenzhen to liberate the design ideas , to develop the design industry.

The site is located in Shenzhen Luo Hu district, near the TianBei subway station. My proposal area includes the original site for design school (Shenzhen cigarette factory), and the part of the old industrial area. Cigarette factory is located in Cui Zhu Park, at the foot of the mountain. The building has less connection with the city traffic system and city industrial chain system. This proposal wants to make a linkage between the urban traffic system, urban design industry system and urban design education system. As the development centre in this area, the design school promotes the old industrial area shifting the function, and makes it become the second creative industry and education base except OCT. Giving full play to the three disciplines, urban design, product design and media design, this proposal wants to put the design school and design industry closely linked, through the three thematic design court yard.
The City of Shenzhen shall encounter the challenges of a large-scale economic transformation and urban regeneration soon after 30 years of reform--Luohu District is of particular interest. The proposed renovation of the former Shenzhen tobacco factory into a future design school can be seen as one of the important attempts. Between March and May, 2012, postgraduate students from School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), conducted a study on how particular component(s) of a design school could possibly connect, interact or exchange with the world. Collaborating with Shenzhen Shenzhen Center for Design, the students further proposed strategies about urban systems and space, and hereby to response to problems arising from the industrial landscape of the Pearl River Delta, the demographic change of the city, and the ongoing transformation of old Luohu District.
