[The Last Mile] Q City • The Last Mile--BMW Plan
August 01, 2012 17:33To encourage public participationto the improvement of their living environment, Shenzhen Center for Design put forward the project plan “The Last Mile” from Shenzhen Planning Building to Xiangmi Merto Station. The project, relaunched in 2012, was involved with three ways of travelling, namely Biking, Metro and Walking. Therefore, it was named the “BMW” Project.

[The Last Mile] Research Project(Collection)
March 04, 2016 19:50The mileage of the current rail transit system totals 178 kilometers, with daily passengers surpassing 3million, making it an indispensable part of the city transport system. However, the “last mile” of the existing rail transit system are faced with multiple problems such as poor quality of public space and unsophisticated walking and cycling connection system, affecting passengers' choices of transport. Therefore, there is an urgent need for systematic modifications to the original plan, to further optimize the public space design and transport connection layout around rail stations. Entrusted by the Urban Transport Office of the Urban Palnning Land & Resources Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, the Shenzhen City for Design and the Shenzhen Urban Transport Planning Center jointly completed the “last mile”project.

[The Last Mile] Record of Research Workshop
March 08, 2016 20:10In Shenzhen, a city advocates the transition from “urban speed” to “urban quality”, the fast-developing rail transit system has brought great convenience to people’s traveling and has been an important way of transportation. While providing city dwellers with fast, convenient and environmentally-friendly transportation services, the rail transit system has been severely limited in use because of the difficulty of connection between the metro and other means of public transport and the “difficulty of arriving” between metro stations and offices or residences. In light of this, the Aformal Acadamy of UABB and the FuturePlus have invited two professors from the School of Architecture, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and Jason Hilgefort, dean of the Aformal Academy, to jointly lead the workshop with participants from the Shenzhen Center for Design. Solutions to the “last mile” problems of urban traffic have been discussed from perspectives of city public transport, slow traffic system and public space.

[The Last Mile] Collection and Analysis of Online Complaints about the “Last-Mile" Metro Station You Find Most Unsatisfactory
April 07, 2016 01:47Currently, the mileage of Shenzhen rail transit system totals 178 kilometers, with118 stops. By the end of 2014, Shenzhen rail transit system has handled 3.98 million passengers, accounting for 27.8% of public transportation uses, making it the mainstay of public transportation in Shenzhen. However, the “last mile” of rail transit system are faced with multiple problems such as poor quality of public space, unsophisticated walking and cycling system. The research group conducted an online survey on the problems with the last-mile transportation in Shenzhen this March, which was greeted with active responses from the citizens. The complete version of the questionnaire and results are as follows.

[The Last Mile]The Second Round of Online Comments Collection and Analysis
May 10, 2016 02:10The research results show that Shenzhen citizens’ needs for “the last-mile transportation after the metro” include accessibility(means of transport), safety(crossings, road surface evenness), identifiability(signage system), functionality(service and recreation infrastructure), and fun(space quality). By sorting out the results, we hope the “last-mile” problem can draw the attention of metro passengers, who can vote to choose the worst metro stations for further design and improvement.
